Survival Backpack List – 5 Essential Items

Whether you are preparing your first 24 hour bug out bag or are planning on hitting the back country with a well stocked survival backpack one thing is for certain you should always have the basics covered.

Survival depends on having or having the ability to obtain:

  • Clean water
  • Reliable supply of food
  • Warmth
  • Shelter to protect your from the elements

Survival Backpack List

The following list of items should be considered the bare minimum that the best survival backpack should contain regardless of your scenario.

1. Water Filter

Clean water is an absolute must for survival. Drinking any water that you are unsure of the quality can pose a serious health risk.

Even if the water looks clean it can contain lots of parasites, diseases and a host of other contaminates.

The only way to truly know of water is safe to drink is to filter it properly and if possible to boil it.

Boiling however, may not always be possible especially if you are on the move.

A good water filter to carry with you is something like the LifeStraw. It's small light and extremely easy to use. It will filter out most particles from the water and will also kill 99.9% of parasites and bacteria.

2. Knife

Carrying a sharp blade is an absolute must, and it's one of the few items that you should definitely carry on your person at all times in a survival situation.

Backing a larger survival knife in you backpack and a smaller one on your belt is one of the smartest things you can do.

A larger knife can be used to chop smaller bits of wood for kindling, strip bark, prepare meat and fish that you have killed. They can even be used to cut wire and dig holes if needed.

3. Fire Starter

Having the ability to start a fire late at night when you are cold, hungry and wet can mean a significant moral boost.

Something as simple as a flint, or a pack of matches can mean the difference to sleeping warm and drying out your clothes and going to bed wet and cold.

Try not to reply on only one source of ignition though. Seeing that they are so small and hardly weigh anything keep several packs of matches a few gas lighters and a good quality flint for striking.

Always store them in water proof zip lock bags as you don't want them getting wet. Try to keep some on you also in case you have your back taken from you or it is lost.

4. First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is an absolute must to have in your survival backpack yet you would be surprised just how many people actually forget to buy one.

Even the simplest of cuts and grazes can turn into something a little more serious especially if you are not eating right, dehydrated and sleeping outdoors.

There are plenty of commercial kits available that have a tonne of items packed into them in a space saving manner.

5. Map and Compass

Learning how to navigate with a map and compass and how to read the terrain in front of you really should be a life skill that is though in school.

A map and compass can mean the difference to walking in a large circle for days or getting to safety in a time efficient manner.

Similarities Between the MOAB 10 and Rush 12

The first similarity between the MOAB 10 and 12 is the RUSH Tier System. As mentioned, you can connect these backpacks to customize your tactical solutions.

Both packs are also made with durable 1050D nylon. This material is lightweight, water resistant, and sturdy. Combined with the quality craftsmanship provided by 5.11 Tactical, either bag should provide many years of use.

Advantages of the MOAB 10 Sling Pack

The primary benefit of the MOAB 10 is the size. It is a compact sling pack that you can use for a day hike. It includes a wide selection of pockets for storing an assortment of gear, while also providing quick access to everything.

The slim design of the MOAB 10 may limit its storage capacity. However, the design is also comfortable. If you prefer to wear your pack on one shoulder, the MOAB 10 is the more comfortable option. However, running may be a challenge when the pack is fully loaded.

Advantages of the Rush 12 Tactical Backpack

If you want a more versatile option, you may prefer the Rush 12. It is a little bigger than the MOAB 10 and made with the same durable material.

With the Rush 12, you get 24-liters of storage space, along with extra pockets for organizing your gear.

The Rush 12 is also a backpack, which means that you get two shoulder straps. However, you do have the option to wear it sling-style.

This tactical backpack is also equipped with an adjustable sternum strap and external compression straps. These extra straps provide more stability and support, which is especially useful when you are on the move.

Which Pack Should You Buy?

Both packs are great options for outdoor enthusiasts. These packs come from a highly respected outdoor gear manufacturer. 5.11 Tactical produces some of the top packs and these two options are both great choices.

However, the one that you choose may depend on your own preferences and the amount that you need to carry. The primary difference between these two packs includes the size and the straps.

The MOAB 12 is slightly larger, with a little more storage space. It also includes two straps, so you can wear it like a standard backpack. However, if you prefer a single strap, the MOAB 10 is one of the most comfortable sling packs available.

In the end, if you want more space, you should select the  RUSH 12. If you want the lightest option, go with the MOAB 10.

  • Removable top that doubles as a daypack

Osprey Atmos vs Aether

The removable top is one of the features that helps the Aether stand out from the Atmos. After removing the top, you can use it as a daypack. However, before making your choice, you should take a closer look at both options.

Similarities Between the Osprey Atmos and Aether Packs

The Osprey Atmos and Aether are made by the same company and include many of the same features. They both have a flapjack top cover, which is useful when removing the lid so that you can keep the interior of your pack dry.

They also feature separate bottom compartments. However, you also have the option of removing the divider to create a larger main compartment.

Both backpacks also include a front stash pocket. This location provides a convenient spot for storing items that you need quick access to, such as an extra jacket or some dry food.

You also get dual-access side pockets on both backpacks to quickly reach the inner compartment without opening the top.

While these features are all useful when you are outdoors, it is the differences that will help you select the best backpack for your next outdoor trip.

Advantages of the Osprey Atmos Hiking Backpack

The Osprey Atmos offers three important advantages over the Osprey Aether.

The first benefit is the storage capacity. The Osprey Atmos offers 65-liters of storage, while the Aether offers 60-liters. While this is not a major difference, the extra 5-liters is enough space to store a change of clothes and other gear.

Along with more storage space, the Atmos provides more storage options. You get more pockets, along with more locations to store stuff and keep everything organized. These features are great if you have a lot of small items that you need to keep separated.

The third benefit of the Osprey Atmos over the Aether is the harness system. The Atmos has an adjustable hip belt, providing a custom fit around your midsection. It also includes a mesh material along the back, which helps reduce sweat and improve comfort.

Advantages of the Osprey Aether Hiking Backpack

The Osprey Aether may be a little smaller than the Atmos, but you should not rule it out. While both backpacks feature a removable top, the removable top on the Aether can double as a daypack. This feature is not included with the Atmos.

The harness system is also different. The Aether includes the older harness system found on most Osprey hiking backpacks. Instead of an adjustable hip extender, the Aether allows you to adjust the length of the torso.

However, with both options, you can adjust the shoulders and the sternum strap.

Which Hiking Pack Should You Buy?

The Osprey Atmos and Aether are two of the highest-rated hiking backpacks, making it difficult for hikers to choose the right pack.

Overall, the Atmos has the most benefits. It provides slightly more storage space, along with material that offers more durability and extra pockets.

If you need to keep your gear organized, the Atmos provides the most options. The Aether is also a quality backpack with a removable top that doubles as a daypack.

However, if you do not need this feature, the Osprey Atmos remains the top option.

Osprey Atmos 50 vs 65

Volume Capacity and Overall Size

The biggest difference between the Osprey Atmos 50 and the Atmos 65 is an obvious one. The Atmos 65 offers more storage space than the Atmos 50. As the name implies, the Atmos 65 has a volume capacity of 65 liters, while the Atmos 50 has a capacity of 50 liters.

While it should not be a surprise that the Atmos 50 is lighter, both bags are about the same width. They should fit on your shoulders about the same.

However, the Atmos 65 is much taller. The height of the bag is where the different volume capacity comes from.

You can also choose from three sizes, for both the Atmos 50 and 65. The medium is the standard size. Choosing the small or large will not dramatically change the volume capacity. Instead, the size provides a minor change to the height to accommodate people of different heights.

Accessing the Main Compartment

The next difference is the access panel for reaching the main compartment. Both backpacks include a large top panel with a zipper. You can open the top panel to reach the main compartment. However, it is difficult to reach the items at the bottom of the bag.

With the Atmos 65, you get a zippered access panel along the bottom of the backpack. When you set the backpack on its side, you can unzip the bottom for easier access.

Additional Differences Between the Two Backpacks

Besides the volume capacity and access to the main compartment, you will notice a few more differences. The next issue is the exterior pockets. The Atmos 50 offers one large exterior pocket, while the Atmos 65 provides five pockets. These are zippered pockets, which helps keep your gear from falling out.

Verdict – Which Atmos Backpack Should You Choose?

Choosing between the Atmos 50 and 65 is a difficult choice. Not only are these two backpacks made by the same company, they are also different versions of the same model.

The main difference is the size of the backpacks. The Atmos 65 is a 65 liter pack, while the Atmos 50 has a 50 liter capacity. If you need the extra space, the Atmos 65 is the better bag. It also includes a bottom access panel for reaching the main compartment and extra exterior pockets.

However, if you do not need 65 liters, you may save some money by purchasing the smaller backpack.

You should also have no problem storing your hunting gear, including a bow, a scope, and a rifle. They also include compression straps for a secure fit, along with multiple pockets for organizing your equipment.

The warranty is where the main similarities between these two backpacks end.

Osprey Stratos 24 vs Talon 22

Osprey Stratos 24 vs Talon 22 Backpack Comparison which day pack is best ?

A sturdy hiking backpack is an essential piece of gear when you go on a long hike. Osprey produces some of the most-recommended hiking bags, including the Stratos 24 and the Talon 22.

If you are having trouble choosing between these two products, take a moment to compare their features.

Osprey Stratos 24 Backpack

As with many hiking bags, the name of this bag refers to its capacity. The Stratos 24 can hold 24 liters of gear. It weighs about 2.75 pounds and has a load range of 10 to 25 pounds. This is a relatively small bag for hiking but big enough to pack enough supplies for several days.

Nylon crosshatch material is used for the main body of the bag. Not only is this material lightweight but it is also durable and breathable.

The harness is fully adjustable to ensure that you get a tight fit against your torso. Adjusting the bag to your body is important for keeping the bag from shifting or moving around as you hike. With a proper fit, the bag should remain stationary, limiting the stress on your back and shoulders.

A sternum strap is included to keep the shoulder straps from shifting and sliding off your shoulders. The latch on the strap also doubles as an emergency whistle. This is a feature that you will find on almost all Osprey hiking bags.

The bag contains multiple compartments for stowing your gear along with loops for attaching additional gear. For example, there are two loops for attaching trekking poles and another two loops for attaching ice axes.

  • 24 liters of storage
  • Trekking pole attachment
  • Internal hydration sleeve

Osprey Talon 22 Backpack

The Osprey Talon 22 is slightly smaller than the Stratos with a capacity of 22 liters. The load range is 10 to 20 pounds and the primary material is a lightweight nylon. The nylon material is not the only similarity between these two bags.

The Talon 22 also features a fully adjustable harness and a sternum strap with an emergency whistle. It also includes attachment points for trekking poles and ice axes. Additional similarities to the Stratos 24 also include the side pockets for storing water bottles.

To keep the water bottles from falling out the pockets, a compression strap fits over the pockets to secure the bottle. You also get a padded hip belt with its own pocket with the Talon 22 as with the Stratos 24.

  • 22 liters of storage
  • External hydration access
  • Airscape Backpanel

Osprey Stratos 24 vs Talon 22

One of the biggest differences between these two backpacks is the size. The Stratos 24 has a total capacity of 24 liters while the Talon 22 has a 22-liter capacity. Depending on how much you need to carry, this could be an important detail to consider. The extra two liters of space also increases the recommended maximum load.

The Stratos 24 has a total weight load of 25 pounds while the Talon 22 has a maximum weight load of 20 pounds. Besides the size, there are a couple more differences to consider.

The Talon 22 features a mesh back panel with lots of padding. While this adds comfort, it does not provide as much ventilation as the back panel used on the Osprey Stratos 24.

The next difference is the hydration sleeve. The Stratos 24 places the hydration sleeve inside the main compartment while the Talon 22 has an exterior hydration sleeve. The exterior sleeve is a little more convenient and does not take up any additional space in the main compartment.

Which backpack should you choose? Both the Talon 22 and Stratos 24 are quality backpacks with wonderful features. However, there are some key differences that should help you make the right selection.

The Stratos 24 provides slightly more space and weight capacity. It also features a back panel with superior ventilation to keep your back from getting too sweaty during your hike. The Talon 22 also contains a few useful features. It has an exterior hydration sleeve, allowing you to store additional items without filling the main compartment.

The Talon 22 also includes a dual-zippered panel for accessing the main compartment. Both products are wonderful choices. When making your decision, consider the features that are most important to you. If you need more space, choose the Stratos 24. Otherwise, choose the bag that meets your budget or style preferences.
